Can I access software available in the computer labs on my own computer?

Yes! You can use Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD).

I wish to install software on my college-owned computer. How can I go about doing that?

The list of available software for faculty and staff contains info on commonly requested software and how to go about getting it installed on your computer.

If you have a college-owned Mac, you can use the Self Service app to install various software packages.

If you would like a software package that is not on the list, you should contact the Helpdesk at 401-865-4357, and we can assist with pricing.

Is there software available for faculty and staff use on our personally owned computer?

Yes! The list of available software for faculty and staff contains info on software packages available both for college-owned and personally owned computers.

I need to install software from a CD/DVD but my computer does not have that type of drive.

Visit the Helpdesk in room LL25 in the Phillips Memorial Library, and we can assist with an external drive.


Students

The following is a list of software the College has available for student-owned devices. The listings below note if the software is available for PCs and/or Macs. The software is listed alphabetically, not by popularity. Please review the entire list to see if the application you desire is included.

Adobe Creative Cloud

PC & Mac

Includes Acrobat DC, After Effects, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash Builder, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc.

Not available for mobile devices.

  1. Visit https://creativecloud.adobe.com and use your school credentials to sign in.
  2. If prompted, select Company or School Account, and then enter your password (or provide your credentials in your school’s login screen).
  3. From the Creative Cloud website, browse for and download your desired app. Click Apps on the top of the page to view all apps.

Note on Lightroom: In order to use Lightroom with our license, you must use Lightroom Classic. Lightroom CC is not licensed.

Microsoft Office

PC & Mac

Students can download Office 365 from http://www.office.com, logging in with their Providence College Microsoft 365 account. The license is only good as long as they are a student at Providence College.

Microsoft Visual Studio

PC

Providence College uses the Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2019 edition, which is a Windows-only application. It is available for download at https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs.

Microsoft Windows

PC & Mac

All students can download the latest version of Microsoft Windows for free. The software can be downloaded from http://providence.onthehub.com. Be sure to register for the site with your Providence College email address.

To install Windows on a Mac, you must also install Parallels Desktop.

Parallels Desktop

Mac

Parallels Desktop is software that allows you to run a virtual machine on a Mac. It is most commonly used to allow you to use a Windows desktop and software on your Mac. It is available at a discount at http://providence.onthehub.com.

Pearson LockDown Browser

PC & Mac

This web browser may be required for taking a test within the Pearson environment.

Spartan Student

PC & Mac

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wavefunction Spartan Student is being offered to Providence College students for home use. The licenses are being distributed within the Chemistry Department. Check with your instructor if you require a license.

SPSS Statistical Software

PC & Mac

SPSS is available for anyone to download and install for both macOS and Windows. Licenses expire annually. Installation files with instructions are available at the following link:

Wolfram Mathematica

PC & Mac

Mathematica is an application for Macs and PCs. Students can request an activation key from Wolfram using the link below. Once requested, they will receive an email with instructions for downloading and activating Mathematica.

Wolfram Mathematica|Online

PC & Mac

Mathematica|Online is a web version of Mathematica. This is different from the Mathematica software you can install on your computer and may not be what your instructor is teaching from.

  1. Create WolframID using your PC email address the Wolfram User Portal.
  2. Validate the request using the email sent to you.
  3. Request Mathematica|Online log-in here.
  4. Check your email to validate.
  5. From a laptop or computer visit Mathematica|Online. Or from a mobile device, download the free Wolfram Cloud app from your device’s app store and login with your WolframID.

Other Software

Other software is available at a discount. Please visit http://providence.onthehub.com for more information. Please be aware that, while that site is branded and managed by the College, the software itself is not provided or necessarily supported by the College.


Faculty and Staff

The following is a list of frequently requested software we have available for faculty and staff. If you are interested in having it installed, please contact the Helpdesk at 401-865-4357 or by email at helpdesk@providence.edu.

The listings below note if the software is available for PCs and/or Macs and if it is available for college-owned computers (College) and/or personally owned computers (Home). The software is listed alphabetically, not by popularity. Please review the entire list to see if the application you desire is included.

If you use a college-issued Mac, there is an app called PC Self Service. This app allows you to install many of the college-licensed software applications as well as utilities to perform various OS repairs and tasks.

These apps are freely available from the App Store.

macOS 10.15 Catalina

Mac – College & Home

If you have a college-owned Mac running versions of macOS older than 10.14 Mojave, your computer will need to be re-imaged in order to upgrade you to Catalina. You can request Catalina by filling out the form located at http://prov.ly/reimage. Please specify what software you’d like us to install when we setup Catalina for you. Microsoft Office 365 will be installed by default. Please be aware that if you currently use Parallels or VMWare Fusion, there may be special considerations for the upgrade, so please let us know if that is the case.

If you have a college-owned Mac running macOS 10.14 Mojave or a personally owned Mac, you can upgrade to Catalina through the App Store if your hardware supports Catalina.

Office 365 is available for college-owned and personally owned computers. The software can be downloaded from http://portal.office.com at no cost.

Microsoft Visual Studio

Microsoft Windows 10

PC & Mac – College

Windows 10 is available for all college-owned PCs. If your college-owned computer is still running an older version of Windows, please request an upgrade to Windows 10 by filling out the form at http://prov.ly/reimage.

Windows 10 is available to run on college-owned Macs as a virtual machine using Parallels Desktop. See below for more info on Parallels.

Desktop computers connected to the campus network will be configured with a network-licensed version, and reauthorization will not be required.

If installed on a college-issued laptop or home computer, the software will need an authorization code entered once per year; new codes are available in August when we renew our license. Installation files with instructions are available at the following link:
