Students
Faculty and Staff

I wish to install software on my college-owned computer. How can I go about doing that?

The list of available software for faculty and staff contains info on commonly requested software and how to go about getting it installed on your computer.

If you have a college-owned Mac, you can use the Self Service app to install various software packages.

If you would like a software package that is not on the list, you should contact the Helpdesk at 401-865-4357, and we can assist with pricing.

Is there software available for faculty and staff use on our personally owned computer?

Yes! The list of available software for faculty and staff contains info on software packages available both for college-owned and personally owned computers.

I need to install software from a CD/DVD but my computer does not have that type of drive.

Visit the Helpdesk in room LL25 in the Phillips Memorial Library, and we can assist with an external drive.


Students

Microsoft Office

Students can download Office 365 from http://www.office.com, logging in with their Providence College Microsoft 365 account. The license is only good as long as they are a student at Providence College.

Microsoft Visual Studio

Providence College uses the Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2019 edition, which is a Windows-only application. It is available for download at https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs.

Microsoft Windows

All students can download the latest version of Microsoft Windows for free. The software can be downloaded from http://providence.onthehub.com. Be sure to register for the site with your Providence College email address.

Adobe Creative Cloud

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Adobe will provide access to their Creative Cloud suite to Providence College students. To download and install Adobe software:

  1. Visit https://creativecloud.adobe.com and use your school credentials to sign in.
  2. If prompted, select Company or School Account, and then enter your password (or provide your credentials in your school’s login screen).
  3. From the Creative Cloud website, browse for and download your desired app. Click Apps on the top of the page to view all apps.

Available for Mac/PC only. Not available for mobile devices.

Note on Lightroom: In order to use Lightroom with our license, you must use Lightroom Classic. Lightroom CC is not licensed.

Wolfram Mathematica

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wolfram is extending Cloud Mathematica to Providence College students. To request Cloud Mathematica, follow the steps below:

  1. Create a WolframID if you do not already have one. Visit https://user.wolfram.com and click “Don’t have a WolframID? Create one.” Fill out the form using your Providence College email address and click “Create WolframID,” and then check your email to click a link and validate your WolframID.
  2. Once you have a WolframID, click here to request access to Mathematica Online.
  3. Once approved, you will be able to go to https://wolframcloud.com and sign-in with your WolframID and password.

SPSS

SPSS is available for anyone to download and install for both macOS and Windows. Licenses expire annually. Installation files with instructions are available at the following links:

Stata is available for anyone to download and install for both macOS and Windows. Installation files with instructions are available at the following links:

Spartan Student

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wavefunction Spartan Student is being offered to Providence College students for home use. The licenses are being distributed within the Chemistry Department. Check with your instructor if you require a license.

Pearson LockDown Browser

This web browser may be required for taking a test within the Pearson environment.

Download

Parallels Desktop

Parallels Desktop is software that allows you to run a virtual machine on a Mac. It is most commonly used to allow you to use a Windows desktop and software on your Mac. It is available at a discount at http://providence.onthehub.com.

Other Software

Other software is available at a discount. Please visit http://providence.onthehub.com for more information. Please be aware that, while that site is branded and managed by the College, the software itself is not provided or necessarily supported by the College.


Faculty and Staff

The following is a list of frequently requested software we have available for faculty and staff. If you are interested in having it installed, please contact the Helpdesk at 401-865-4357 or by email at helpdesk@providence.edu.

Software for Windows

Microsoft Windows

Windows 7 and Windows 10 are available for college-owned computers. For personally owned computers, Windows 10 can be downloaded from http://providence.onthehub.com at no cost. Be sure to register for the site with your Providence College email address.

Microsoft Office

Office 365 is available for college-owned and personal computers. For personally owned computers, the software can be downloaded from http://portal.office.com at no cost. Contact the Helpdesk if you wish to have it installed on a college-owned computer.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Includes Acrobat DC, After Effects, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash Builder, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc.

Available for college-owned and personal computers. Visit the Adobe Creative Cloud website and sign-in using your Providence College email address and password. Under your name on the left side, you’ll see “Install Creative Cloud app.” Download and install that app on your computer. The various Adobe applications can be installed through the Creative Cloud Application once you’ve signed into the app. Please be aware that you can only be signed into the Creative Cloud Application on two computers at a time.

MATLAB

Available for on-campus use only. Contact the Helpdesk to have it installed.

Standard & Poor’s Research Insight

Available for on-campus use only. Contact the Helpdesk to have it installed.

SAS Statistical Software

Available for college-owned and personal computers.  If you would like it for your office computer, please contact the Helpdesk.  If you would like it for your personally owned computer, you may check out installation media from the Library Circulation Desk.

SPSS Statistical Software

Available for college-owned and personal computers. Computers connected to the campus network will be configured with a network-licensed version, and reauthorization will not be required. If installed on a laptop or home computer, the software will need an authorization code entered once per year; new codes are available in August when we renew our license. You may check disks out from the Library circulation desk to install on personal computers.

STATA

Available for college-owned computer. Contact the Helpdesk to have it installed.

Wolfram Mathematica

For on-campus use, we have 30 concurrent-use licenses. If you would like it installed on your desktop computer, please contact the Helpdesk.

For laptops or home users, faculty and staff with a “providence.edu” email address must fill out a request for a home use license.

Software for macOS

macOS 10.14 Mojave

This is available to everyone with a school-owned Mac. Your computer will need to be re-imaged in order to upgrade you to Mojave. You can request Mojave by filling out the form located at http://prov.ly/PC-OSX. Please specify what software you’d like us to install when we setup Mojave for you. Microsoft Office 2016 will be installed by default.

Please be aware that if you currently use Parallels or VMWare Fusion, there may be special considerations for the upgrade, so please let us know if that is the case.

iLife (iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, Keynote)

These apps are now freely available from the Mac App Store.

Final Cut Pro X, Motion, and Compressor

We have limited copies of this available for school-owned Macs. Please contact the Helpdesk to request them.

Microsoft Office

Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

Available for college-owned and personal Macs running Yosemite or later. If you would like it for your office computer, you can install the latest apps with Self Service. If you do not currently have Yosemite or later, please request a macOS upgrade. For personal installations, the software can be downloaded from http://portal.office.com at no cost.

Parallels

We have limited copies available for school-owned Macs. Please contact the Helpdesk to request it.

Adobe Creative Cloud

For college-owned computers, you should install the Creative Cloud Application for Named Users from the Self Service app that is on your computer. You will then be able to sign into this application using your Providence College network credentials to install any of the various Adobe applications.

Sibelius

We have 30 concurrent-use licenses. It can be installed on any college-owned computer via Self Service. If it is installed on a laptop, it will only work on campus.

For on-campus use, we have 30 concurrent-use licenses. It can be installed on any college-owned computer via Self Service.

For laptops or home users, faculty and staff with a “providence.edu” email address must fill out a request for a home use license.
